Ueno Park

Ueno Park

Ueno Park is a large public park in Ueno District that was established in 1873, on the land that formerly belonged to Kan’ei-ji Temple. There are a number of great museums in this park. Hanami cherry blossom festival is also held in this park. In recent years, its parks and attractions have had more than 10 million visitors in recent years, making it the most popular park in Japan.

History

Ueno Park occupies the land that formerly belonged to Kan’ei-ji and was located in 1625 at the Devil’s Gate, a safe passage to the northeast of Edo Castle. Many of the temple buildings were destroyed in the Ueno War of 1868 and during the Bushin War, in which Takugawa’s forces were defeated by those aiming to restore imperial rule.

In December of this year, Ueno Hill, apart from the remaining temple buildings which include a 5-story shrine from 1639, the Kiyomizu Kanondo or (Shimizudo) from 1631 and the main gate (all of which are recognized as important cultural features of Japan) were property of the city of Tokyo.

Various proposals were made to use the park as a school or hospital, but Dr. Hollandi turned the area into a park instead. In January 1873, the Dajo-kan announced his approval of the establishment of public parks, noting that in prefectures such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, places such as Sensoji and Kan’ei-ji were of historical interest. , there are beautiful scenery and recreation and relaxation that people can visit and enjoy.

Ueno Park was the first national park in the world until a year after the establishment of Yellowstone National Park. A year after the establishment of Ueno Park, Shiba, Asakusa, Asukayama and Fukugawa Parks were established next to it.

One of the best features of this park is the ability to enter the park with a private car. Also, places of interest such as the zoo and the Tokyo National Museum are also located in this park.
